Honoring Monica Roberts, Trans Pioneer

October is LGBTQ History Month, and ENC is using these final weeks before the election to highlight modern-day pioneers who have given their all to the ongoing fight for our lives.

Last week, our community lost an absolute legend named Monica Roberts, who forever changed the media landscape with her culture-shifting blog TransGriot.

Long before mainstream media began paying attention to the skyrocketing murder rates of transgender women of color in this country, Monica made it her life's mission to help identify and uplift these victims.

Through TransGriot, she poured her heart into uncovering the names and lives of these often voiceless women, and provided a blueprint for national media today about how to compassionately report on transgender victims of violence. With the recent death of Brooklyn Deshauna, 2020 has become the deadliest year on record for transgender Americans.

Her work eventually earned her special recognition at the 2016 GLAAD Media Awards, and we invite you to head here watch her acceptance speech yourself.

Without Monica's tireless efforts, our cultural understanding about how systems of oppression shape the lives and experiences of Black and Brown trans women would lack an important historical lens. She is a pioneer in the truest sense of the word.

This week, we invite you to join us in honoring Monica's legacy with action as we come down to these final days before the most important election of our lifetimes. The lives of Black and Brown trans women are on the ballot this year in the truest sense of the word, and we owe it to Monica to keep fighting for them.

Early voting starts on Thursday. Do you have a voting plan? Map it out now and join us in the fight for a better future for our community's most vulnerable.
