Position Overview

Policy and Government Affairs Associate is a full-time position responsible for monitoring legislative and regulatory developments that could impact the organization’s areas of interest. Advocating for policies that align with the organization’s interests, and building relationships with key government officials, lawmakers, and relevant stakeholders to advance key policy and legislative objectives. The position reports to the Executive Director. Anticipated start date of June 2, 2025.

Responsibilities
  • Alongside the Executive Director, develop and execute Equality NC’s Legislative Policy Agenda, including overseeing lobbying efforts at the North Carolina General Assembly and participating in lobbying across the state when appropriate.
  • Analyze and track legislation, statewide and nationally, that affect North Carolina’s LGBTQ+ community and Equality NC’s areas of interest.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government officers, community leaders, organizational leaders and elected officials.
  • Monitor and analyze public opinion and legislative developments that may impact the organization's areas of interest.
  • In partnership with the Communications Director and Executive Director coordinate crisis response to address negative publicity or issues that may impact the organization's areas of interest.
  • Collaborate with the Communications department to ensure consistent messaging, organizing and advocacy in alignment with the organization's goals and values.
  • Stay abreast of policy related trends and best practices within the areas of the organization's interests and make recommendations for policy and advocacy response.
  • Lead and mentor the Policy and Government Affairs interns and/or volunteers, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
  • Assume other reasonable related responsibilities assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications/Experience
Need to have
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Political Science, or related field.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in public affairs, public relations, or related roles.
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful public affairs strategies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local and national government and legislative processes.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and media monitoring tools.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop innovative solutions to the ongoing political climate and policy crises.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and metrics to measure the effectiveness of public affairs strategies.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Nice to have
  • Experience working in a corporate, non-profit, or government setting.
  • Experience in a remote or hybrid work environment.
  • Proven experience in policy analysis, advocacy, and political participation.
  • Proficiency in utilizing various communication channels, including social media, to effectively engage with the public.
Compensation and Benefits
  • This is a mid-career role. The hiring salary is $60,000.
  • Equality NC pays 80% of employee Health and 100% dental, vision, long-term disability, short-term disability, and life insurance
  • 15 days of PTO with an increase at year one and again at year three; 16 paid holidays annually; end of year office closure
  • 3% Matching 403(b) after three months of employment
