State of Equality: November Newsletter

A Message From Kendra

This Election Season -- and entire year -- has been nothing short of a wild ride. In all, Equality North Carolina endorsed 147 candidates from the Governor's office down to local races all across our state, and 82 of our candidates were victorious with four races still too close to call.

It was a thrill to not only support these incredible pro-equality folks, but to see the ways our supporters and members plugged into the meaningful work like never before. Throughout the election season, over 200 people volunteered their time and energy with ENC to help Get Out The Vote, and we couldn't be more grateful for each and every one of you.

Whether you tuned into a Town Hall, donated money, volunteered for a candidate or talked to your neighbor about voting, you made a difference this year. THANK YOU for being a part of our family.

With several races still too close to call and the Chief Justice of the NC Supreme Court race heading to recount, we're still waiting on a few answers in North Caroling. But we're proud to announce that those races aside, 83 of our endorsed candidates won this election cycle. Head here to view the list in full.

Join Equality North Carolina and Campaign for Southern Equality for a Town Hall about the sunset of HB142 and what it means for LGBTQ people and nondiscrimination laws in North Carolina. This event will be a webinar-style format -- all are welcome.

Join the 2019-2020 Rural Youth Empowerment (RYE) Fellowship to discuss rural organizing in North Carolina, welcoming in the 2020-2021 RYE Fellows and explore the needs of rural queer youth. This event is free and open to all.

Though this holiday season will look vastly different from years past, retail therapy does not have to change! This Black Friday and Holiday Season consider amplifying your support of Equality NC Foundation by shopping our AmazonSmile link! With your support we can:

  • Equip our RYE Fellows with the skills to create positive change in their local communities through self-envisioned projects
  • Implement LGBTQ-inclusive training and professional development to K-12 educators, school staff, and administrators to create more welcoming environments in schools
  • Address the epidemic of LGBTQ homelessness with 40% of homeless youth identifying as LGBTQ

We would like to send a very special thank you to Lulu Diaz of Baila Beats Academy for their support of Equality NC! Baila Beats Academy is a healthy, safe, and inclusive environment where everyone can learn the joy of movement and dance. Thank you, Lulu and Baila Beats Academy for donating a portion of your proceeds to ENC! "We're All One Heart, One Beat"

Giving Tuesday is December 1, 2020. While the global day includes fundraising it's not JUST about fundraising - it's about communities banding together and giving of their time, power, skills, expertise, and resources. This was most evident during this year. However you decide to spread your generosity on Giving Tuesday (though we hope it's with us), please take the opportunity to bring change to your community.
