The Opportunity - About Equality North Carolina

Equality North Carolina (ENC) is the nation's oldest statewide organization committed to securing rights and protections for the LGBTQ+ community. Since 1979, we've been building power across North Carolina through advocacy, education, and uplifting the stories of queer and trans North Carolinians in pursuit of racial and social justice for all. We believe that y'all means all, and that none of us are free until all of us are free.

LGBTQ+ rights are on the ballot this November and we need our neighbors' help to fight and push back against the hostile agendas targeting us all. Door-to-door canvassing is one of the most powerful tools we have to reach people, build relationships, and get folks to the polls. This is how we win, and this fall, we need people ready to be on the ground with us.

Position Overview

We're hiring paid canvassers in Mecklenburg, Wake, and Buncombe Counties to work from late July through Election Day, November 3, 2026. This is a 1099 contract part-time position at $25 per hour.

Hours will be lighter in August as you get trained and settled in. By September, we're counting on a minimum of 20 hours per week, increasing up to 30 hours per week as we push into the final stretch before November 3. We need people who can commit to that arc and see it through to Election Day.

Canvasses run throughout the week and on weekends, typically across morning and afternoon shifts, exact scheduling will vary.

Phone banking opportunities are available alongside door knocking. To be eligible, canvassers must complete a minimum of 10 hours of door knocking per week. Getting into our neighbors' communities face to face is the priority.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

  • Talk with your neighbors, have real conversations about what they care about, what's at stake, and when and how to vote
  • Knock doors independently after initial coaching and onboarding
  • Accurately collect and enter voter data using a smartphone canvassing app
  • Show up as a reliable, team-oriented part of our field operation
Qualifications/Experience

The ideal candidate is people-oriented, self-motivated, and committed to this work through November 3. They build rapport quickly, listen deeply, and understand that canvassing is relational, not transactional. They can work independently, take direction well, and show up for their team.

Most importantly, we're looking for people who are aligned with ENC's mission and values. People who believe in LGBTQ+ equality and understand that elections are one part of a longer fight for justice for all of us. If that's you, we want to hear from you.

Training is provided. Prior canvassing experience is not required, though candidates with organizing or field experience will be prioritized in hiring. Candidates must be able to commit to the full period through November 3, 2026, with increasing hours through the fall.

Nice to have:

  • 1-2 years as a volunteer or staff doing field, legislative, or campaign organizing.
  • working knowledge of North Carolina Politics and Advocacy, particularly in assigned region
  • Working knowledge of VAN, Google Sheets,or another tool for data management.
  • 1-2 years of remote work experience
  • strong ties to the assigned region in North Carolina
