RALEIGH, NC — The administration at UNC Health has quietly moved to terminate gender-affirming medical care for patients under the age of 19, a decision made behind closed doors and without public notice. Equality NC denounces this move as a cowardly surrender to political extremism and a betrayal of the transgender community.
"UNC Health is pushing North Carolina’s ban on gender-affirming care for youth past the already extreme HB808," said Eliazar A. Posada, Executive Director, Equality NC. "By extending restrictions to under-19-year-olds, UNC Health is engaging in an extreme overreach of an already dangerous law. When one of North Carolina’s largest employers shuts out members of the LGBTQIA+ community in the dark, they demonstrate a willingness to shut all of us out."
Gender affirming care saves lives and allows transgender people of all ages to thrive. Equality NC urges UNC Health to reverse this harmful decision. We also encourage health care providers across the state to continue providing care for trans North Carolinians.
Equality NC remains committed to holding UNC Health accountable. We encourage all supporters to sign up for our newsletter at equalitync.org to be the first to access our upcoming resource hub and stay informed on our next steps to protect transgender healthcare in North Carolina.
Equality North Carolina is the nation's oldest statewide organization committed to securing rights and protections for the LGBTQIA+ community. We aim to ensure that every North Carolinian sees themselves reflected in this movement, working together to create a safer, more equitable world for all marginalized individuals. Together, we can build a better North Carolina.
