RALEIGH – Today, the North Carolina House and Senate both overrode Governor Cooper's veto of SB 20 – a bill which deeply restricts abortion rights in North Carolina.
This bill, which passed the State House under cover of night, is a cowardly attack on the bodily autonomy of all of our communities. Abortion bans create a chilling climate that ties the hands of doctors, interferes in medical best practices, and puts patients in dangerous situations.
We are already seeing the consequences and harmful ripple effects of abortion bans across the country where people are being forced to travel long distances for time-sensitive, essential health care and being denied care for miscarriage management, ectopic pregnancies, and other high-risk conditions. We condemn the passage of this harmful legislation.
ENC Executive Director Kendra R. Johnson (she/her) said:
We're deeply disturbed and enraged by the passing of SB 20 into law. The government should never force a person to carry a pregnancy or give birth against their will. A person's health, not politicians, should guide important medical decisions at all stages of pregnancy. And we know that the harms of this legislation are only going to be magnified for those living at the intersection of marginalized identities.
