A Message from Kendra

What we thought might be a quiet start to 2021 turned into stressful, emotional, and life-threatening times for our communities. From the insurrection back in January to the anti-trans bills sweeping the country, we were literally thrown into a fight for our lives during this first half of 2021.

As we head into late Spring, the anti-trans bills may be tabled here in North Carolina, but they continue to be written into law in states all across the South. We must all do everything we can to support and show up for the trans, gender-nonconforming, and BIPOC people in our lives during this continued time of hardship.

At Equality NC, we hold these communities at the center of everything we do. We're here for you.

There are six dangerous bills currently moving through the NC House and Senate targeting our communities in four different areas. The bills are:

  • HB324, which would ban the teaching of the idea that "the United States is racist or sexist," preventing teachers from accurately portraying U.S. history.
  • SB 100 and SB 101, which would take away funds from cities that cut police funding and which would force North Carolina sheriffs to cooperate with ICE.
  • HB 805, which imposes harsh penalties on protesters who participate in what is deemed a "riot"--even when they haven't violated any laws,
  • And SB 405 and HB 453, which impose increasing restrictions on abortions.

You can contact your Representatives and Senators about these bad bills here and here. You can also stay tuned to our social channels for updates.

Join Equality NC for a discussion about our upcoming plans to fight anti-LGBTQ legislation and how to promote our slate of pro-LGBTQ bills.

This is a great opportunity to find out how you can get involved in your local area, meet our new Civic Engagement staff, who are living all across NC, and get to know other volunteers in the state and your area. Even if you haven't volunteered in the past, we'd love to have you join!
