The murder of George Floyd at the hands of white police officers in Minneapolis was nothing short of horrific. Time and time again, we've seen that black and brown Americans are not safe from violence within their daily lives in this country -- even in the midst of a global pandemic ravaging all of our communities.
We're facing an epidemic of violence and discrimination in this country against vulnerable communities exacerbated by the climate of white nationalism enabled by our current political administration. We've seen it in Puerto Rico with the brutal murders of our transgender siblings Layla Peláez, Serena Angelique Velázquez, Alexa Negrón Luciano and Yampi Méndez Arocho. We saw it when Ahmaud Arberry was chased and murdered by armed white residents of a South Georgia Neighborhood earlier this month. We saw it just days ago while Christian Cooper was bird watching in Central Park. And until we address the fundamental structures and systems upholding white supremacy in this country, we will continue to see it over and over again.
Equality North Carolina expresses solidarity with the righteous anger on display in the wake of yet another senseless act of brutality against a black American.
