Equality NC Responds to Allegations of Alamance Magistrates' Refusal to Carry Out Marriage Law

Equality NC responded today to news that Alamance County magistrates are refusing to marry same-sex couples following Friday's ruling enjoining the state from enforcing a ban on the freedom to marry. "Equality NC is extremely concerned about the situation for same-sex couples seeking civil ceremonies in Alamance County. While details of unlawful actions on the part of magistrates are still unclear, it appears from statements made in the media that certain magistrates who object to performing same-sex marriage ceremonies will not be required to do so, in violation of the law."

Equality NC Responds to Pasquotank Magistrate's Refusal to Marry Same-Sex Couple

A state magistrate in Pasquotank County could face disciplinary action after refusing to marry a same-sex couple. Magistrate Gary Littleton declined to perform the couple's civil ceremony, citing his "religious views." Equality NC immediately responded to the news, assuring same-sex couples that magistrates would be held accountable.

Equality NC Responds to Second Ruling Striking Down Marriage Ban

A federal judge in Greensboro, N.C., has ruled that North Carolina’s marriage amendment is unconstitutional, but will also allow the state’s top Republican legislative leaders to intervene in their continuing effort to defend the constitutional ban. Equality NC immediately responded to the ruling, assuring same-sex couples statewide that marriage equality remains "the law of the land" and deriding the GOP leadership's continuing waste of taxpayer dollars.

POLL: NC Support for Marriage Equality Tops Opposition

A new poll released on September 15, 2014, from NC-based Elon University Polling found that 45% of North Carolinians now support full marriage equality for same-gender couples (versus 43% against). It is the first time that Elon University Poll has found support for the freedom to marry topping that of opponents.

Winston-Salem Provides Benefits to Married Same-Sex Couples

Winston-Salem is believed to be the first North Carolina city to recognize legally-married same-sex couples for the purposes of city employee health benefits. In a letter to city employees on Aug. 28, Winston-Salem’s human resources director, Carmen Caruth, said the city would recognize all legal marriage licenses from any state or other U.S. jurisdiction, including both opposite-sex and same-sex couples.
