Today, Greensboro approved new protections for gay and transgender citizens and workers, including becoming the first city in North Carolina to prohibit discrimination in housing based on sexual orientation and gender identity, joining more than 200 other cities, counties and states across the US.

Equality NC Responds to Death of Gay Veteran

Equality NC responded today to the death of a gay veteran from injuries he sustained in a brutal attack last weekend. A suspect in the crime is being held by police after an aggravated assault in the early morning hours of Nov. 9 in a downtown hotel. Police say the attack on the victim, whom the suspect met at a local gay bar, is not being considered a hate crime.

Equality NC has been carefully monitoring a violent crime committed in Greensboro in the early morning hours of Nov. 9. The victim was reportedly robbed, beaten, and set on fire after meeting his attacker at a local gay bar.

NEW STUDY: Approximately 159,000 LGBT Workers in North Carolina Lack Statewide Protections Against Ongoing Employment Discrimination

Approximately 159,000 LGBT workers in North Carolina are vulnerable to employment discrimination absent explicit statewide legal protections, according to a new report co-authored by Christy Mallory, Senior Counsel, and Brad Sears, Executive Director, at the UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute. At least seventeen localities in North Carolina prohibit public sector employment discrimination against LGBT people, however only 2% of the state’s labor force is employed by those municipalities.

In a statement released by Equality NC, executive director Chris Sgro responded today to an announcement made by Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) that he intends to introduce legislation allowing magistrates and registers of deeds in North Carolina to bypass current marriage laws under the guise of "religious freedom."

BREAKING: Raleigh Votes to Protect Transgender Workers

Raleigh City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday afternoon to include protections for transgender city employees in revised policy language approved by the City's Human Relations Commission. With the vote, the state's capital city became the sixth city in North Carolina to protect all city employees in the LGBT community.

Judge Reverses Course Requiring All Alamance Magistrates Marry Same-Sex Couples, Equality NC Responds

Today, Equality NC, the state's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organization, responded to news that the judge supervising Alamance County magistrates has reversed course and will now require all country magistrates perform same-sex marriages or face immediate consequences.

This week, North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts released a memo to Superior Court Judges, Chief District Court Judges, District Court Judges, Clerks of Superior Court and Magistrates including instructions that no state magistrate could refuse to marry same-sex couples. Read it here.
