ACLU Moves to Challenge NC’s Amendment One

Today the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the ACLU of North Carolina Legal Foundation (ACLU-NCLF) announced plans to challenge North Carolina’s ban on marriage for same-sex couples by amending a federal lawsuit filed against the state last year on behalf of six same-sex couples and their children that challenges North Carolina’s ban on second parent adoptions. The announcement comes on the same day that the ACLU has filed a federal challenge to Pennsylvania’s marriage ban and the ACLU and Lambda Legal have announced a challenge to Virginia’s marriage ban.

Equality NC Joins National LGBT Organizations, Business Leaders to Push for Employment Protections

Equality NC joined leaders from other LGBT advocacy groups and representatives from regional and national businesses today at a press conference led by the Human Rights Campaign highlighting the need for expanded employment protections for LGBT workers.

Take action: As of now, the UNC Board of Governors is considering doing exactly what we were able to avoid during this recent session in the North Carolina legislature: a ban on gender-inclusive housing at the 17 UNC System campuses. The Board of Governors will meet on August 8 and 9, to determine whether to strip gender-inclusive housing options that have been shown to not only promote LGBT student safety but also improve overall campus climate as well.

STUDY: Gay couples at higher risk of housing discrimination

A first-ever national study of housing discrimination against same-sex couples has found gay and lesbian couples face a higher risk of discrimination in the private rental market when compared to heterosexual couples. The study was administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the University of Albany, State University of New York.

POLL: 71% of North Carolinians Oppose Employment Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation

A new poll from NC-based Public Policy Polling found that 71% of North Carolinians think employers should not be able to discriminate against employees based on their sexual orientation compared to just 20% who think they should be able to.

New Policy Allows Transgender Americans to Change Gender Identity on Social Security Records

On June 14, 2013, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced a new policy to for updating Social Security records to reflect a person’s gender identity. Under the new policy, a transgender person can change their gender on their Social Security records by submitting either government-issued documentation reflecting a change, or a certification from a physician confirming that they have had appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition.

In a letter released today from Equality NC and Equality NC Foundation, Board Chairs Elaine Martin and Ken Wittenauer updated supporters and stakeholders on the latest in the organization's search for a new executive director. Current Executive Director Stuart Campbell announced his intention to leave the organization on April 15, 2013.

A landmark new report released in June 2013 examines how lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) workers might have the same job as a coworker, yet be legally fired, denied equal benefits and be required to pay thousands of dollars more in taxes simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

New Poll Shows North Carolina’s Small Businesses Strongly Support Employment Non-Discrimination Laws to Protect Gay and Transgender Workers

A scientific opinion poll released today by national organization Small Business Majority and local partner Equality NC reveals that 67 percent of entrepreneurs and small business owners in North Carolina believe state law should prohibit employment discrimination against gay and transgender people. Sixty-five percent also support a federal law.

In a video released Wednesday, North Carolina's NHL hockey team, the Carolina Hurricanes showed their support for gay and lesbian athletes. The video is part of the You Can Play campaign dedicated to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation.
