Charlotte City Council Approves Landmark Non-Discrimination Ordinance Establishing Local Protections for LGBT Residents

CHARLOTTE - Today, TurnOut! Charlotte, a partnership of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Equality North Carolina and MeckPAC, hailed the leadership and vision of the Charlotte City Council for voting to advance city-wide non-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity, in public accommodations, vehicles for hire and in government contracting. The ordinance passed by a vote of 7-4, with the strong support of newly-elected Mayor Jennifer Roberts, who has been a leading voice for the ordinance in her campaign and since she’s taken office.

Legal Challenge Filed Against SB2, North Carolina “Magistrate Recusal” Law

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (December 9, 2015) – This morning six plaintiffs filed a federal lawsuit challenging Senate Bill 2, the state law passed in defiance of federal court orders that struck down Amendment One and declared that marriage is a fundamental right for gay and lesbian citizens. Senate Bill 2 allows magistrates who do not believe in marriage equality to renounce their judicial oath to uphold and evenly apply the United States Constitution. Senate Bill 2 places personal belief above sworn constitutional duty and unlawfully spends public money to accomplish an expressly religious goal. Ansley v. North Carolina challenges Senate Bill 2 under the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment and the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment. The plaintiffs are represented by Tin Fulton Walker & Owen, a Charlotte-based law firm.

Charter School in Rutherford County Votes to Suspend All Extra-Curricular Activities Due to Complaints Regarding LGBT Clubs

FOREST CITY, N.C. -- This afternoon, The Lake Lure Classical Academy school board in Rutherford county voted 5-3 to suspend all extra curricular activities for K-12 students. The vote came as a response to parents voicing opposition to newly formed LGBT groups. Chris Sgro, Equality NC’s executive director, issued the following statement in response to the vote.
