Sexual Health for Youth in North Carolina: SHYNC
Youth in North Carolina and beyond deserve access to accurate and comprehensive sex education. Only 8.2% of students surveyed in the 2019 GLSEN National School Climate Survey, said they received LGBTQ-inclusive sex education. LGBTQ youth, youth of color, and youth with disabilities disproportionately make up the young people in juvenile detention and the foster care system. About 20% of youth in state custody care, including foster care and juvenile detention centers, are LGBTQ; 85% of those LGBTQ youth in custody are youth of color.
North Carolina holds responsibility, as caretakers of these youth, to provide knowledge and resources about sexual health, STIs, gender, and more.
Equality NC is teaming up with the Sexual Health Youth Advocacy Coalition (SHYAC), NC Equality commits to advocating for these youth and their right to a comprehensive and inclusive sex education and access to sexual health resources.
Will you join SHYNC to seek solution together for youth in custody care and their access to comprehensive sex education?
Join the statewide convening on November 10, 2021 at 1pm EST.
