Women's History Month: Honoring Sarah McBride

From all of us at Equality North Carolina, Happy Women's History Month! We join you in celebrating the resilience and power of women from all walks of life -- particularly those helping to transform the political arena.

Throughout March, ENC is spotlighting trans women who have been elected to political office from all across America. These history-makers demonstrate not only the importance of representation in the highest offices of leadership, but the political and social progress of American culture when it comes to womanhood, visibility, and the shifting tides of power.

Today, we're honoring Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender state senator elected to public office in U.S. history. As a senator from Delaware, McBride's 2020 win makes her, for now, the country's highest-ranking transgender official.

McBride has dedicated her life to the LGBTQ rights movement and burst onto the national stage at the 2016 Democratic National Convention following years of working for The Human Rights Campaign. It was here that she became the first openly transgender person to speak at a national party convention, paying tribute to her late husband Andrew Cray and his commitment to LGBTQ rights.

On the night of her 2020 win, she said in a tweet, "I hope tonight shows an LGBTQ kid that our democracy is big enough for them, too."

Equality NC is working every day to support queer, trans and gender-nonconforming folks like McBride to develop the skills and resources they need for public service. We're committed to reshaping the face of our politics and ensuring that the most vulnerable members of our community have a seat at the political table.

Thank you for supporting our fight for a pro-equality North Carolina -- and Happy Women's History Month!
