Pro-equality Voters Start to Turn OUT In North Carolina
Last Thursday was the first day of early in-person voting in North Carolina, and HRC joined Equality North Carolina at sites across the Tar Heel State to rally pro-equality supporters. Voters lined the streets and edged around corners -- eager to send a message to Governor McCrory and members of the General Assembly that discrimination has no place in the state.
This year in North Carolina, LGBTQ equality is on the ballot. In March, Governor Pat McCrory signed into law HB2 -- an outrageous and unprecedented anti-LGBTQ law that eliminated existing municipal non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people and living wage ordinances and prevents such protections from being passed by cities in the future. Votes cast in the state’s governor’s race, as well as General Assembly races, could mean the difference between potentially repealing this law or keeping discrimination on the books.
Turn Out North Carolina, a coalition between Human Rights Campaign PAC and Equality North Carolina Action Fund PAC, emerged in the wake of HB2 with a simple goal: mobilize thousands of LGBTQ and pro-equality North Carolinians to vote for pro-equality candidates up and down the ticket this election.
From first-time voters who were driven to the polls by this discriminatory law to lifelong North Carolinians who wanted to make it clear that HB2 does not represent North Carolina values, we saw the full force of our pro-equality movement on the first day of early voting.
We urge you to keep the momentum up right through Election Day so that we can put pro-equality candidates like Roy Cooper in the governor’s mansion and overturn the anti-equality, veto-proof majority in the Statehouse.
It's not too late to register to vote in North Carolina. During the early vote period that runs through Saturday, November 5th, North Carolina residents can register to vote and cast a ballot at the same time at any early voting location in their county. More at hrc.im/NCVote.
