ACTION ALERT: Don't let the State Board of Education erase our communities!

On January 27, 2021 the NC State Board of Education discussed proposed revisions to North Carolina public school K-12 social studies standards, including additions that would encourage educators to discuss systemic discrimination, systemic racism, gender identity and the perspectives of marginalized groups.

In light of outspoken opposition to these proposed revisions from state board members and the Lt. Governor, Equality NC is urging our supporters to take action by contacting members of the Board of Education, urging them to pass these revisions and demanding an approach to education which considers systemic racism, systemic discrimination and gender identity.

Historically, institutions, including education, have erased histories of marginalized groups, namely Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and LGBTQ histories. These erasures have a lived impact on our communities both from a policy perspective and within our day-today-lives. Students deserve to have access to textbooks and curriculum which reflect their identities and truths, and North Carolina should be equipping students with the tools to understand the very real history of oppression and disenfranchisement in this country.

What is happening right now with the NCSBE is an attempt to erase our communities. Equality NC is urging the NC State Board of Education to pass these proposed revisions and uplift, honor and deepen celebration of diverse and intersecting identities in curriculum and professional development. This cannot be another example of the ongoing racism, transphobia, and homophobia which further underresources communities of color and LGBTQ people in North Carolina.
