Equality NC Executive Director Kendra R. Johnson Speaks At HKonJ
"I’m Kendra Johnson, and my pronouns are she/her/hers. And I stand here today, as the executive director of Equality North Carolina. We’re the oldest statewide organization working for the lived equality of LGBTQ people. For 40 years, we’ve been working to ensure that people like me, can live our lives free of discrimination in the workplace, housing, education, healthcare, and the cities and towns that they inhabit. Our work never ceases. I stand here steps away from where our legislators voted to prevent cities and towns from protecting our fundamental rights, To fair treatment in the places that we work, live, and raise our families. And yes, H.B. 142 is still the law of the land here in North Carolina and right now, in Washington D.C., the Supreme Court is examining whether we have the right to be fired because of who we are or who we love. yeah. Let that sink in. The Supreme Court will decide whether we can be fired for things that have nothing to do with our Job performance or our work ethic. I was asked to talk about the policies we need but I can.t we need representation. We need to let the officials that believe in the intrinsic dignity and worth of every person whether they’re LGBTQ, black or brown, undocumented, regardless of gender, whether we’re poor, able-bodied, whether we’re incarcerated, we need representation that believes in common sense values and fairness in justice and liberty for all. We need to work to get everyone elected. I need everybody to roll up their sleeves and get our people to the polls. So that we can take back the NCGA. We can take back our congress, and we can take back our presidency. When we vote, We Win! When we vote, We win!"
