Equality NC's #GetEngagedNC Caps Successful Statewide Tour With Eastern Regional Event
Equality NC rounded out its #GetEngagedNC campaign on March 8 with Saturday's Eastern Regional event in Greensboro focused on reengaging coastal community activists to move the region and state forward on issues of equality. Combining community cultural work and civic engagement, #GetEngagedNC is Equality NC's flagship campaign focused on engaging and mobilizing networks of support to promote basic LGBT and allied visibility as well as a growing electoral presence.
The day-long #GetEngaged training hosted by Equality NC Foundation, drew its biggest crowd yet, full of coastal-area community organizers and organizations, campus activists, faith and business leaders, as well as those interested in mobilizing pro-equality voters in 2014.
Representatives from national, state and regional organizations were also in attendance, including ACLU of North Carolina, Community Alliance for Equality, SAGE Wilmington, Pitt County Young Democrats, East Carolina College Democrats, UNC-Wilmington LGBTQIA, Wilmington Pride, Coastal Carolina Community College LGBT Center, and more.
Despite the diverse audience, the day's focus remained on hyper-local strategies for engaging and connecting Eastern North Carolina's many LGBT and allied activists and organizations in the important work of creating a living equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) North Carolinians and their allies, as well as building a leadership base that can move pro-equality voters to the polls in this important election year.
Karen Lowe of Community Alliance for Equality, and a trainer focused on organizing pro-equality voters, told the packed Wilmington audiences, "You've got to have faith...faith you can organize for equality. Without days like today in the East, there can be no true movement for LGBT equality throughout North Carolina."
The #GetEngagedNC Eastern Regional event was to be the third of three day-long events focused on engaging local communities on important LGBT issues and actions. To meet increasing demand, the series will now conclude with a fourth, just-added Triangle event on April 2.
