Raleigh, N.C. - This week for the annual National Coming Out Day, Friday, October 11, Equality NC remembers and celebrates the life of Matthew Shepherd. Fifteen years ago this week, 21-year old Matthew Shepard was brutally beaten, tortured, and left to die. The tragedy rocked the nation, and to this day serves as a reminder of what is at stake for the LGBT community and why we must continue to speak out - LOUD - on issues of equality. Matthew's tragedy and the subsequent courage and commitment of his mother, Judy Shepherd, to LGBT rights are examples we will never forget.
This Friday, October 11, is National Coming Out Day.
"Equality NC invites you to stand up in honor of Matthew. Stand up for your neighbor, your friends, your family and yourself," said Chris Sgro, Equality NC executive director. "It's never been more important to be courageous. Be visible. Be out."
On Friday, make the decision to talk to someone you know about what it means to be an ally or LGBTQ individual. Come out with Equality NC on National Coming Out Day and help us keep Matthew Shepard's memory alive. Join our visibility campaign and update your Facebook profile picture to this image as a reminder that we must keep coming out, continue to be a visible ally, and keep fighting to end violence and discrimination.
