Equality NC Hosts Day of Action at N.C. General Assembly

Raleigh, N.C. – Equality NC, the state’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization, will host nearly 100 pro-equality North Carolinians in Raleigh, at the N.C. General Assembly, on Tuesday, May 5, for the organization's 2015 Day of Action.

Following morning sessions held at the N.C. Museum of History, (5 E. Edenton St., Raleigh, NC 27601) led by Equality NC staff and lawmakers, LGBT and allied constituents will attend a day of meetings with their state elected officials on a variety of issues, including:

  • support for the future of employment non-discrimination legislation protecting gay and transgender state workers
  • opposition to Senate Bill 2, which would allow magistrates and other public officials to discriminate against same-sex couples
  • continuing opposition to a recently-defeated "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" (or RFRA) bill that would allow private businesses to discriminate against the LGBT community

Equality NC Executive Director Chris Sgro said the organization's Day of Action seeks to continue the momentum of recent victories for the state's LGBT community by allowing pro-equality North Carolinians to be a visible part of lawmaker's decision-making moving forward.

"We remain focused on continuing to fight laws that would allow anyone to discriminate against same-sex couples in the name of religion, advocating for proposed legislation that would finally provide statewide protections in employment for tens of thousands of LGBT North Carolinians, and fighting to keep our state on the right side of the RFRA debate, and history, in this legislative session and beyond," said Sgro.
