Charter School Amendment Passes House With Potential Protections for LGBT Students

North Carolina's only openly-gay legislator, Rep. Marcus Brandon (D-Guilford) today resubmitted a previously tabled amendment to Senate Bill 793, Charter School Modifications earlier proposed by Rep. Susan Fisher (D-Buncombe) barring charter schools from discriminating against students on the basis of "sexual orientation" and "gender identity." While his amendment was tabled, it prompted a second amendment proffered by Rep. Nathan Ramsey (R-Buncombe) which passed 115-9, without enumerated classifications, but could nevertheless provide added protections for gay and transgender charter school students.

LANDMARK VICTORY: 10th Circuit Appeals Court Rules in Favor of Marriage Equality

Today the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver ruled in favor of same-sex couples’ freedom to marry, upholding a marriage ruling out of Utah in December. It is the first ruling by a federal appellate court since last year's victory in the Supreme Court and, unless reversed, will pave the way for the freedom to marry throughout the 10th Circuit, including in Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Kansas.

Equality NC Demands GOP Response to Pro Tem's Anti-LGBT Comments

Equality NC is calling on Republican leaders House Speaker Thom Tillis and Senate Leader Phil Berger to clarify their positions on LGBT issues after inflammatory remarks on the House floor debate Tuesday by Speaker Pro Tem "Skip" Stam. Equality NC executive director asked the GOP leaders "whether Rep. Stam speaks for himself or his caucus, or if they have a position more in touch with the values of our state."

Equality NC Responds to Proposed LGBT Protections, Anti-LGBT Rhetoric on N.C. House Floor

Today, Rep. Susan Fisher (D-Buncombe) introduced an amendment to pending charter school legislation (SB793) that would prohibit a state-funded charter school from discriminating against students on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. The proposal was followed by anti-LGBT rhetoric by N.C. Republican leader, Rep. Paul "Skip" Stam.

Equality NC responded today to this morning's federal challenge to Amendment One filed in the Western District of North Carolina on behalf of the United Church of Christ (UCC) as a national denomination and clergy from across faith traditions and same-sex couples. The case, General Synod of the United Church of Christ vs. Cooper, challenges the constitutionality of marriage laws in North Carolina - including Amendment One - that ban marriage between same-sex couples and make it illegal for clergy to perform wedding ceremonies for same-sex couples within their congregations.

ACLU Files Additional Challenge to NC’s Amendment One

Today the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the ACLU of North Carolina Legal Foundation (ACLU-NCLF) and the law firms of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP and Ellis & Winters LLP filed a new case in federal court today on behalf of three married, same-sex couples seeking state recognition of their marriages. Because of the serious medical condition of one member of each couple, they are asking the court to take swift action.
