NC House Introduces Bill to Protect LGBT Workers

Primary Sponsors Representatives Paul Luebke, (D-Durham), Tricia Cotham (D-Mecklenburg), Rick Glazier (D-Cumberland), and Shelly Willingham (D-Edgecombe, Martin) introduced House Bill 443, "Nondiscrimination in Public Employment" this week, alongside a host of other legislative sponsors in a companion bill to SB612 that would provide much-needed protections for North Carolina's LGBT workers.

N.C. House Speaker Moore: RFRA Bill to Be Scrutinized

House Speaker Tim Moore responded Tuesday to a GOP bill designed to refuse services based on religious beliefs, saying the bill would be scrutinized and reiterating "The last thing that we need to do is to rush into anything." Equality NC responded to the Speaker's comments by calling for North Carolinians to encourage more legislative leaders to oppose this discriminatory bill.

Charlotte Non-Discrimination Ordinance Coalition condemns City Council rejection of LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination protections

The Charlotte Non-Discrimination Ordinance Coalition is condemning Charlotte City Council’s decision on Monday to reject amendments to local non-discrimination ordinances. The measures would have added sexual orientation and gender identity, among other characteristics, to already protected classes in four city non-discrimination ordinances. Their action repeats a similar rejection of inclusive non-discrimination protections made by Council in November 1992.

The Charlotte Non-Discrimination Ordinance Coalition (CNDOC), consisting of local, state, and national organizations, including Equality NC, is calling on North Carolina’s largest city, Charlotte, N.C., to update its non-discrimination ordinances to protect gay, transgender, and other citizens, from arbitrary discrimination in public accommodations and other city services.

State Senate Committee Passes Anti-LGBT Religious Refusal Bill

Equality NC, the state’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization, was present today as a state Senate committee approved a bill that would allow magistrates and registers of deeds to opt out of providing legal marriage services or issuing marriage licenses. The legislation is likely to head to a full hearing on the Senate floor today.
