Local Organizing
Equality NC works with local organizers and groups to secure fair policies from local governments and school boards.
Our work in each community varies with the needs of local organizers and groups, as we support their work on local policies. Issues can include employment discrimination and domestic partner policies for local government employees, domestic partner policies, changes to Human Relations Commissions, bullying and harassment policies for students, and comprehensive sex education.
In recent years, Equality NC has been active in local efforts to
- secure domestic partner benefits in the City of Durham and Orange and Durham Counties
- add sexual orientation to the mission of Raleigh's Human Relations Commission
- add gender identity or expression to discrimination policies for employees of Carrboro and Chapel Hill
- include a request to repeal North Carolina's anti-LGBT "Defense of Marriage" law in legislative agendas from Carrboro and Chapel Hill.
- add sexual orientation to Mecklenburg County's discrimination policy.
Equality NC is supporting several current local efforts around the state. Depending on available time and resources, we can aid local organizers by
- using our Action Center to generate public support
- providing technical and strategic assistance to local organizers
- connecting local organizers with people in other areas who have led successful campaigns
- helping convene or participate in local coalitions
- providing staff to help organize in the community
