Three Things To Know and Share about the Amendment

9/15/11 - Now is a exactly the right time to start working against efforts to amend the state constitution to limit rights to all unmarried couples. You can make a difference immediately by letting people know what the amendment is and what it isn't, and here are three important points to start you out.

(1) THIS IS NOT about North Carolina. We at Equality NC are all North Carolinians, and like the majority of North Carolinians polled in February, March, April, and September, we do not support this amendment. This was the work of 105 people in the N.C. legislature. As the only southeastern state currently without this amendment, this is not what our state stands for, nor what it represents. We know you're angry, and disgusted, and disillusioned, but please, know that North Carolina is home to great folks, many of whom are working hard to build (and keep) a state of Equality. Now is the time for all supporters of equality, both in-state and out-, to come together and be heard.

(2) THIS IS NOT a marriage amendment. The press may be calling it that, but this has nothing to do with just same-sex marriage (which is already prohibited in NC by state statute). A "no" vote would not allow same-sex marriage. Rather, this amendment is bigger than that: it could BAN ALL LEGAL RELATIONSHIP RECOGNITIONS FOR SAME-SEX AND OPPOSITE-SEX UNMARRIED COUPLES (INCLUDING A BAN ON CIVIL UNIONS AND DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS). If someone says they support equal rights for gay folks but just not marriage, then they should logically oppose the amendment now heading to the ballot. A "no" vote means not writing discrimination into NC's founding document. Plain and simple.

(3) THIS IS NOT North Carolina's fight. This is everyone's fight. Whether you live in Raleigh or Romania, there are things you can do to stop this now ... and turn the tide of anti-LGBT discrimination once and for all. To repeat, if we beat this in May, it will be thwarted forever. Help us end this, here and now. Donate your time, donate your dollars, donate your voice.

And stay tuned. This will be a long fight, and we are currently working tirelessly to get you the tools you need to do it right ... together. Thank you.
