School Violence Prevention Act Introduced In House & Senate

3/12/2008 - Following yesterday's press conference, the School Violence Prevention Act was formally introduced in both chambers today. Equality NC and our partners in the Prevent School Violence NC coalition secured 55 bi-partisan sponsors of the House version, and 15 sponsors of the Senate version. The large number of sponsors in both chambers are a demonstration of strong support from legislators.

Rep. Rick Glazier, the lead sponsor in the House, stands with supporters of the School Violence Prevention Act.

"Supporters of school violence prevention have made a strong showing as this bill is introduced," said Ian Palmquist, Equality NC's Executive Director. "Now we have a lot more hard work to do if we are going to successfully get it through the process and into our schools."

The House version, HB 548, was referred to the House Education Committee, and, if it receives a favorable report there, will go to the House Judiciary II Committee. The Senate version, SB 526, was sent to the Senate Education Committee.
