Anti-LGBT Rally Fails to Draw Crowd

— filed under:

A far-right rally at the North Carolina Legislature to support the anti-LGBT state constituional amdendment drew only a fraction of the thousands organizers had hoped would attend. Equality NC used the rally to achieve positive ends.

This afternoon, Called2Action, the Family Policy Council, and the Christian Action League held an anti-LGBT rally at the North Carolina Legislature to support the discriminatory, anti-marriage constitutional amendment.

Although the rally's organizers had aimed to get 10,000 people to attend they had only a few hundred. Perhaps most North Carolinians have more important issues to worry about like jobs and health care, instead of spending their time propagating religious-based bigotry.

While we are saddened that anyone would rally to write discrimination into the constitution, we are proud that Equality NC was able to use this event to make a difference by raising much needed funds to fight the amendment, connecting our supporters with their legislators and to get our message out.

Dozens of Equality NC supporters pledged to give a small amount for every minute the rally went on. In just a few days, we secured nearly $100 per minute in pledges! Today's rally ended up totaling 128 minutes of anti-equality rhetoric, generating thousands of much-need dollars to support our work.

Equality NC activists called and emailed their legislators today, ensuring that they hear our side of the issue in addition to that of the rally participants. Ed Farthing and Ian Palmquist, our Co-Directors, also €delivered more than 200 postcards to Speaker Jim Black from Charlotte Pride attendees to thank him for opposing the amendment.

The rally was also a great opportunity for us to get our message of fairness and equality out in the press, on television and radio, and in online media. Look for us tonight on local stations in the Triangle and statewide on Time Warner's News 14 Carolina, and in the morning in papers across the state.

Thanks again to all our supporters for helping us make something good out of this divisive rally.
