Mid-Term Elections Bring Opportunity for LGBT Community

1/20/2006 - The 2006 election cycle brings new threats and new opportunities for our community to build our political power.

It may seem like we just got through the last state elections, but the 2006 political season is already underway. With no statewide races, it would be easy not to pay attention this year. That would be a huge mistake.

What's at stake?

  • The threat is real. Anti-LGBT forces will be working hard to take over the legisalture and force an anti-LGBT constitutional amendment on the ballot. We have to work hard to make sure that LGBT voters and our friends and family are heard loud and clear in both the May primary and November general elections.
  • North Carolina's only openly gay legislator, Sen. Julia Boseman, is being heavily targeted by our opposition. Equality NC PAC will fight to keep our community's voice in the Senate.
  • Our opponants are vulnerable. By taking them on and supporting our allies, we can build support for proactive legislation on issues like employment discrimination and anti-LGBT violence.

Equality NC will be doing more than ever this election year. Equality NC PAC kicked of the election cycle with a successful December fundraiser in Charlotte that brought in more than $32,000 to support our legislative allies and take on the advocates of bigotry and discrimination. This puts us well on track to more than double our political contributions in 2006--a huge step forward as we continue building the political muscle of the LGBT community in North Carolina.

We will also be working harder than ever to turn out LGBT and allied voters. In 2004, Equality NC Foundation helped lead a massive effort to turn out more than 25,000 infrequent voters who belong to progressive groups in our state. We're working with other groups to expand our coalition and reach even more voters in 2006.

Keep an eye on your email and mailbox to find out many ways you can help make a difference this year.
