Mecklenburg Commissioners Give Preliminary Approval to Partner Benefits
1/30/2009 - Equality NC applauds the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, who voted yesterday to have staff develop a proposal for implementing domestic partner benefits for county employees. The 6-3 vote was the first step towards offering equal benefits to unmarried same- and opposite-sex couples.
Equality NC recognizes the board's Chairman, Jennifer Roberts, for her leadership on this issue.
MeckPAC, a local LGBT advocacy group led the effort, and has been working with commissioners for several years towards this goal. More than 100 Equality NC supporters responded overnight to an urgent action alert by contacting the commissioners in support of the bill.
Several other local governments in North Carolina offer partner benefits, including Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Durham, Greensboro, and Durham and Orange Counties.
Equality NC looks forward to continuing to support MeckPAC's efforts to win final adoption of this policy.
