Marcus Brandon Honored as Equality NC "Legislator of the Year"

10/11/2011 - Equality NC Foundation announced today that N.C. Representative Marcus Brandon (D-Guilford) will be honored as the LGBT advocacy organization's “Legislator of the Year” at its 2011 Equality Gala on Saturday, November 12, in Greensboro. As the state’s only openly gay or lesbian legislator, Rep. Brandon was instrumental in the legislative campaign against North Carolina's proposed anti-LGBT constitutional amendment.

Despite debate on an anti-LGBT amendment, Rep. Marcus Brandon assured qnotes the state and its people are 'moving in the right direction' on issues of equality and social justice.

“I take it very personally,” Brandon told qnotes of the amendment. “I’m the only openly gay member of the legislature and there’s definitely a responsibility that comes with that when we’re talking about something so personal.”

Equality NC Foundation's Kay Flaminio applauded Brandon's leadership in opposing this discriminatory legislation and supporting the state's fast-growing LGBT citizenry.

“We thank you, Representative Brandon, for telling the truth amid all the lies that have been told about LGBT North Carolinians over the past several months, and we look forward to your continuing diplomacy on our behalf as the battle continues against the anti-LGBT amendment,” Flaminio said in an email to supporters announcing the award. “We’re confident that in the end, the truth will indeed win out, and you will have played a key role in bringing that about.”

Rep. Brandon, a first-term representative from Greensboro, will be honored along with Equality NC Foundation's regional Equality Champions at the fifth annual Equality Gala to be held at the Empire Room in downtown Greensboro. The gala will follow a day-long conference on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro designed to foster education, advocacy, and leadership around the anti-LGBT amendment.
