Equality NC Names Alex Miller Interim Executive Director
6/21/2011 - Equality North Carolina and its Board of Directors announced today that Alex Miller, a former lobbyist for the organization with extensive experience advocating for pro-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) legislation, will serve as interim executive director for Equality North Carolina, beginning July 5.
“I am deeply honored for the opportunity to serve North Carolina’s LGBT community and to build upon Equality NC’s tremendous success,” said Miller, who currently serves as a contract lobbyist at the North Carolina Legislature. “In my role as interim executive director, I look forward to being back with Equality NC as we continue the fight against LGBT discrimination and for equality.”
As a former Infantry Squad Leader in the U.S. Army, and now an accomplished political consultant, Miller is no stranger to hard-fought battles or significant victories, including those for the LGBT community. He coordinated Equality North Carolina’s trailblazing legislative campaign that culminated in the historic passage of the School Violence Prevention Act in 2009. At the same time, Miller also served as the statewide LGBT advocacy organization’s primary lobbyist and led all coalition advocacy, research and communications efforts.
Following his previous legislative triumphs with Equality North Carolina, Miller went on to successfully manage one of the most competitive North Carolina General Assembly campaigns in the tough 2010 political season, helping pro-equality legislator Rep. Rick Glazier of Cumberland County win re-election.
The experienced pro-LGBT and equality advocate returns to Equality NC as the organization prepares to lead the charge against North Carolina’s proposed anti-LGBT constitutional amendment. “I am proud to bring my years of legislative experience and knowledge to Equality NC as the organization prepares to fight this discriminatory legislation and keep our state on the right side of history,” said Miller. “Today, I join a committed team dedicated to mobilizing our statewide network of supporters and bringing the full resources of the organization to bear in our effort to secure justice for all LGBT North Carolinians.”
Even before his groundbreaking pro-LGBT work with Equality NC in 2009, Miller orchestrated significant legislative and political wins for a variety of underserved causes.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are thrilled that Alex is back to lead Equality NC as we head into a new era of the organization’s growth,” said Board Chair Dan Gurley. “Miller is an inspiring political mind who has already done groundbreaking work for the LGBT community and beyond and we are confident that his track record of advancing equality and justice makes him a perfect fit for the organization as we both continue our fight against the anti-LGBT amendment and work to fill ENC’s top spot permanently.”
Miller is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University and received his Masters of Social Work from the University of North Carolina in 2007. He lives in Chapel Hill, N.C. with his wife and two children.
