Day of Action Draws Record Crowd
3/25/2009 - Yesterday's Equality NC Day of Action drew 250 people from across the state, more than double attendance at previous lobby days. Participants came from as far away as Duck on outer banks and Hendersonville in the mountains to meet with the legislators to make the case for equal rights and justice.
More than 200 Equality NC supporters worked the halls of the Legislative Building in Raleigh at Day of Action.
"We are thrilled to see so many North Carolinians, both LGBT and allies, who took time off of work to travel to Raleigh and make do the hard work of building support for fair and equal treatment of everyone, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity," said Ian Palmquist, Executive Director. "We know that face-to-face conversations are the single most effective tool we have to get more legislators to support our issues."
Participants focused their efforts on opposing the marriage discrimination constitutional amendment, passing the school violence prevention act, and building support for employment non-discrimination protections for state workers. Other topics included hate crimes, comprehensive sexuality education, HIV/AIDS funding, and crime against nature law reform.
Those attending in person were joined by nearly 400 others who participated virtually by emailing legislators in support of the group's legislative agenda.
