Boseman to Receive ENC's 2009 Legislative Leadership Award

9/30/2009 - Equality NC Foundation announced today that it will present its 2009 Legislative Leadership Award to Sen. Julia Boseman at this year's Equality Gala. Boseman, the first and only openly gay legislator in North Carolina, is being recognized for her leadership in the effort to pass the landmark School Violence Prevention Act and for her advocacy on behalf of LGBT North Carolinians.

"As the lead Senate sponsor of the anti-bullying bill, Julia fought every step of the way to pass this bill with critical protections for LGBT young people," said Ian Palmquist, Executive Director. "Julia's hard work has changed the tone of the debate on our issues in the Senate and was an integral part of our effort to protect kids in school and make history for LGBT North Carolinians."

The award will be presented at Equality NC Foundation's 2009 Equality Gala, to be held at The Empire Room in downtown Greensboro the evening of Saturday, November 14. More information about the 2009 Equality Gala, along with the daytime 2009 Equality Conference that precedes it, is available online, including information about how to be a table captain or event sponsor.

"The Equality Gala brings people from across the state to celebrate all that we've accomplished together," said Palmquist. "This has been our strongest year ever, so it's the perfect opportunity for us to recognize one of our strongest champions."

Boseman is in her third term representing New Hanover County. She was recently profiled in The Independent Weekly.

Previous recipients of Equality NC Foundation's Legislative Leadership Award are Rep. Rick Glazier (2007) and Rep. Paul Luebke (2008). Photos from last year's event are in our photo gallery.
