Act Now! Phone Banking for Marriage Equality

10/27/2009 - Our sister statewide equality group, Equality Maine, has asked for North Carolina's help. Next week, Maine will vote on marriage equality for same-sex couples. The vote is polling close, but you can help by phone-banking from home at your convenience for free.

North Carolina remains the only Southern state to hold off a marriage discrimination amendment, but that's still a ways from having marriage equality. We all remember what a terrible blow it was to win and then lose civil equality in California. Help us preserve this foothold of fairness up in New England.

Here's the message from Equality Maine. If you can help, send them an e-mail.

==========

In eleven days, Maine will vote on marriage equality for same-sex couples.

The most recent poll on Question 1 showed that it is exactly tied: 48-48.  This is an off-year election, so major candidates will not be on the ballot and turnout is expected to be low.  While we have identified thousands of supporters of same-sex marriage, these last few days are critical to making sure that those supporters actually get out to vote NO on Question 1.

Our problem is simple: we don't have the capacity here in the state of Maine to make as many calls as we need to make during the last 4 days of Get Out The Vote.  We are turning to you because we need the help of our friends around the country to make 57,000 dials.

We need you to commit to leading at least one phone bank for NO on 1 sometime in those last four days:

Saturday, October 31st
Sunday, November 1st
Monday, November 2nd
Tuesday, November 3rd (Election Day)

Once you know which day works for you, send me an e-mail with your contact information.  We will follow up with you immediately to help coordinate your phone bank.

In just 11 days Maine could become the first state in the country to win marriage equality at the ballot box, but only if you help us in our final push.

As Maine goes, so goes the nation.

Together, we are changing things for the better for us, for our families, and for everyone. Equality benefits all Americans, not just the oppressed ones. Help us make a stand for all people by protecting civil marriage equality.
