ENC Applauds Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Approval of Inclusive Anti-Bullying Policy

3/12/2008 - Last night the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board voted 6-3 to approve a strengthened anti-bullying policy which clearly protects against all forms of bullying, including bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. Equality North Carolina applauds the new policy and calls on the state legislature to pass the School Violence Prevention Act, House Bill 1366, which would ensure all students statewide would have these critical protections.

"In the face of right-wing opposition, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School stood against bigotry and for the safety of all students, including those most vulnerable to bullying and harssment," said Ian Palmquist, Executive Director. "We must work to make sure that every public school provides a safe place for LGBT students to learn."

This victory is due in large part to the hard work of many local leaders, including Kelly Doherty, members of local gay-straight alliances and the members of MeckPAC. Equality North Carolina celebrates their leadership.
