Comprehensive Sexuality Education Bill Introduced

3/20/2007 - This afternoon an important piece of legislation was introduced which would replace the state's antiquated, incomplete and inaccurate "abstinence until marriage" sex education program in grades 7-9 with an abstinence-based, comprehensive sexuality education program.

Comprehensive Sexuality Education Bill Introduced

Rep. Susan Fisher

If passed, House Bill 879 would ensure that all young people have access to the information they need to make informed decisions about sex. A study by the Department of Public Instruction shows that the vast majority of parents want the schools to provide this kind of instruction, yet the state continues to bow to the wishes of a small, radical minority the prefers misinformation to the kind of frank discussion that really helps prevent disease and unintended pregnancy.

The bill's primary sponsors are Representatives Susan Fisher, Linda Coleman, Maggie Jeffus and Melanie Goodwin. Equality NC supports the efforts of NARAL Pro-Choice NC, the NC AIDS Action Network and others on this important bill.
