Community Organizer

Position Description:

This full-time position coordinates field and volunteer activities in support of Equality North Carolina’s agenda.

The Field Organizer will manage Equality North Carolina’s volunteer and grassroots organizing program to enhance Equality North Carolina’s grassroots lobbying power, strengthen our base of activists and supporters, support pro-equality candidates, educate North Carolinians about LGBT issues, and engage key business and civic leaders in ways likely to influence decision-makers. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing plans for grassroots organizing
  • Developing a schedule of outreach and visibility events designed to engage local activists and increase number of identified supporters
  • Identifying, recruiting and training supporters to tell stories of how discrimination has affected their lives
  • Managing voter contact program
  • Supporting organizing in targeted communities to secure local policy victories
  • Identifying and cultivating allies among local religious, social justice and political organizations for coalition-building and to increase awareness of Equality North Carolina’s agenda
  • Working with staff to ensure that volunteer opportunities are meaningful and likely to lead to sustained commitment and leadership among activists
  • Working with the Executive Director and staff to manage grassroots lobbying campaign, including coordinating constituent contacts and tracking legislative activity
  • Recruiting and managing interns
  • Accurately tracking and assessing volunteer productivity, and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • A demonstrated commitment to equal rights and justice for LGBT people
  • Previous organizing experience on political or issue-advocacy campaigns
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate ideas and prepare analyses
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including those necessary to build and maintain harmonious relationships and interact well with others
  • Highly organized and resourceful
  • Ability to to prioritize, work independently, solve problems, complete tasks, and manage a number of simultaneous projects, with minimal supervision
  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and circumstances
  • Be computer-proficient and have a solid working knowledge of  Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet
  • Be willing to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends
  • Have reliable transportation and willingness to travel within North Carolina

Equality NC is headquartered in downtown Raleigh, but will also consider applicants based in Charlotte.

Internship

Position Description: 

Equality NC is looking for outstanding students who are committed to winning equal rights and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender North Carolinians to serve as part-time interns for the upcoming semester. Interns will gain valuable experience working for a nonprofit advocacy organization.  Internship duties will depend on the skills, background, and interests of the intern, but may include development/fundraising support, working with endorsed candidates, coordinating educational programs and outreach or other responsibilities. While we don't offer stipends at this time, we are glad to work with you to secure course credit.
