Senate Bill 526: School Violence Prevention Act
PASSED! This bill requires schools to adopt strong policies against bullying and harassment, including bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This bill will provide strong policies to protect all students from bullying. It is also the first time the terms "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" appear in the North Carolina General Statutes.

Bill Summary
Introduced on March 12, 2009 by Sen. Julia Boseman along with 14 co-sponsors, Senate Bill 526, would require public schools to adopt strong policies against bullying and harassment, specifically including bullying and harassment based on race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, physical appearance, sexual orientation, or mental, physical, or sensory disability, or by association with a person who has or is perceived to have one or more of these characteristics.
Equality NC is playing an active role in Prevent School Violence NC, a broad coalition working to pass the bill.
