Director of Organizing

Job Description:  Director of Organizing

Location:           Raleigh, North Carolina

Position:           Full time, exempt

Reports to:       Executive Director

 

Overview

Equality North Carolina (ENC) seeks experienced, talented, mission-driven applicants for the position of Director of Organizing to work full-time based in our Raleigh office.  Equality NC is a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization working to secure equal rights and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender North Carolinians, and provides staff support to Equality NC Foundation, a 501(c)(3) educational organization and Equality NC PAC, a state political committee.

Position Overview

The Organizing Director is responsible for strengthening and expanding existing coalitions as well as building public support for LGBT equality among North Carolina’s electorate, business community, faith community, and political partners. Key areas of responsibility include coalition building, business and faith outreach, program development, research, and grassroots efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Support, strengthen and expand existing partnerships with a wide variety of communities, allies and organizations recently established during the referendum campaign against Amendment One.
  • Establish and grow long term alliances with organizations and leaders across various non-profit, religious, social justice, and political sectors to advance the priorities of ENC.
  • Oversee efforts to identify and partner with leaders in the business community and others to promote workplace non-discrimination statewide.
  • Develop strategies to identify and reach out to new ally communities. 
  • Plan and direct major events, including the annual Equality Conference and Day of Action.
  • Work with the Executive Director and staff to manage grassroots lobbying campaign, including coordinating constituent contacts through phone banking, online action alerts, and some canvassing.
  • Manage voter contact program.
  • Develop schedule of outreach and visibility events designed to engage local activists and increase number of identified supporters.
  • Supervise paid and unpaid volunteers and interns working on outreach and coalition building.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Five years full-time related experience in coalition building, field management, and/or campaign work.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects, develop work plans and meet targeted goals and objectives. Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends.
  • Experience supervising staff to manage multiple projects, develop work plans and meet targeted goals and objectives.
  • Experience building diverse teams and working with transgender communities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated computer literacy.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting. Comfort working in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
  • Ability to travel throughout the state.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equal rights and justice for LGBT people.

 

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience. Includes competitive benefits package.

Development Associate, PT

Job Description:  Development Associate

Location:           Raleigh, North Carolina

Position:           Part-time, non-exempt

Reports to:       Director of Development

Equality NC seeks a part-time (~15-20 hours/week) development associate.

Position Overview

  • Manage monthly donor program and donor acknowledgment system
  • Draft proposals and prepare reports
  • Assist director of development with fundraising events including annual Equality Gala
  • Other duties as assigned by development director

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • At least one year of experience in database management or with donor software
  • Previous fundraising experience preferred

Compensation: Hourly rate commensurate with experience.

Internships - Summer and Winter 2012 Interns

General Information

Equality NC is looking for outstanding students (and graduates who have a comparable amount of hours to devote to an internship) who are committed to winning equal rights and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender North Carolinians to serve as part-time interns for the upcoming semester. Specific intern positions are listed below.

Interns will gain valuable experience working for a nonprofit advocacy organization.  Internship duties will depend on the skills, background, and interests of the intern. Many of our former interns have gone on to secure jobs in LGBT organizations and other political and non-profit groups.

While we don't offer stipends at this time, we are glad to work with you to secure course credit.

Intern Positions

Communities of Color Outreach Internship - Equality NC seeks a talented, motivated intern to help us strengthen our outreach and organizing in communities of color. Tasks include attending meetings and providing support to our People of Color Task Force, promoting Equality NC at events, working with staff to identify LGBT and allies of color to engage in our work, assessing the policy needs of LGBT people of color, and other outreach duties. Story-Gathering Internship - Friendly, outgoing, compassionate "people-person" sought to lead story collection project for multiple issue campaigns. The ideal candidate will be a great listener with top-notch communication skills, flexible hours, basic film editing skills (YouTube-style), and a passion for helping people turn their negative experiences into positive legislative change. Community Organizing Internship - Energetic, organized, confident, hardworking, can-do students and community members with time to dedicate sought to rally North Carolinians in support of LGBT rights. As a Community Organizing Intern, you will work with individuals and organizations in your area to raise awareness of LGBT issues and empower community members to become activists through formation of local advocacy groups. Some understanding of the legislative process is a plus, and a passion for equal rights is a must. Fans of racism, sexism, classism, and the like need not apply. Development/Fundraising Internship - The number one need within the state LGBT equality movement is for solid fundraising skills. Equality North Carolina’s director of development seeks a development intern to provide assistance with grant applications, leadership gifts, and special events including the annual Equality Conference & Gala.

You will need to have unbridled enthusiasm for our work, strong intuition, great people skills, and excellent writing and communication skills. You will also need to love working in a fast-paced environment with dedicated staff and other talented interns.

Communications Internship - This intern will assist with the organizations communications efforts, including development of online content and press releases, and managing an effort to collect personal stories of how laws and policies affect LGBT North Carolinians. Rising college senior, recent graduate, or graduate student with background in journalism, communications or public relations preferred. Please submit three writing samples with your cover letter. Volunteer Management/Outreach Internship - Equality NC seeks a qualified, highly motivated intern to perform volunteer management and outreach duties. Specific tasks include drafting and sending information about ENC's events to community organizations and our list of supporters, coordinating volunteer events for ongoing projects, and new volunteer recruitment, amongst other duties. Transgender Issues Internship - Equality North Carolina is looking for an intern with interest working on issues related to transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.
