MEDIA EVENT: Members of Business, Transgender, Charlotte City Council, and Faith Communities React to NCGA's Potentially Wasteful Special Session

RALEIGH, N.C.–Leaders from the LGBT community, including transgender representatives will join faith and business leaders to voice opposition to a costly and wasteful special session this Thursday at the General Assembly. Senate and House leaders have both threatened a special session to overturn Charlotte's non-discrimination protections enacted by their democratically elected City Council. Over 200 cities across the nation, including Myrtle Beach and Columbia, SC have similar ordinances. In none of those cities has protecting LGBT people from discrimination proven to be a public safety issue. The threat from the NCGA to interfere in local matters and overturn protections against discrimination is unprecedented and unusual.

Representatives from Charlotte City Council and the transgender community will explain grave concerns over this kind of discriminatory effort and the problems it causes for local governments who want to protect all of their citizens against discrimination. Join the event at 10AM outside the NCGA to hear more.
