Equality NC Responds to Recent Asheville Hate Incident

Two gay men from Charlotte say they were verbally assaulted then attacked during a recent visit to Asheville. Mark Little says two women and a man pulled up alongside he and his partner as they walked back to their hotel on September 23rd and began shouting gay slurs. Then the man got out and beat Little causing face and head injuries. Asheville Police are investigating, but no arrests have been made in the apparent hate incident.

Equality NC Responds to U.S. Commitment to AIDS-free Generation

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this week said the U.S. will not back down from its commitment to ensuring that children are no longer born with HIV, that the risk of becoming infected is curbed and that those already infected will have access to treatment. "I am here today to make it absolutely clear: The United States is committed and will remain committed to achieving an AIDS-free generation," Clinton told attendees at the International AIDS Conference.

UNC School of Government Weighs in on Amendment One Impact to Domestic Partner Benefits

A new position paper by Diane M. Juffras of the UNC School of Government suggests that the passage of Amendment One would not bar municipalities from offering domestic partner benefits to public employees. Currently, nine towns, cities and counties in North Carolina offer domestic partnership benefits to public employees, including same-sex couples and their children. In 2013, the City of Charlotte will become the tenth.
