Equality NC Action Fund, the political action committee (PAC) of North Carolina’s statewide Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) advocacy group, Equality NC, today announced its second round of endorsements for the 2012 General Election. These endorsements highlight candidates in races for Governor, Council of State, and key judicial races, and join the list of preferred candidates for legislative races announced last week.

Scholarships are now available for Victory Fund's Candidate and Campaign Training, offering attendees the unique experience of working with political consultants and hearing from openly LGBT elected officials to learn the fundamentals of running for election and working on a campaign, specifically as an LGBT candidate.

Tuesday afternoon’s LGBT Caucus from the Democratic National Convention (#LGBTdnc) featured Obama Administration notables such as Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius presiding over a packed room of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgnder (LGBT) delegates and media. The LGBT caucus took on a historic tone with the formal announcement of the Party’s platform in support of full marriage equality, as well as calls for continued support for the first sitting President to support the freedom to marry.

Equality Federation is the national association of statewide LGBT advocacy organizations, and the annual "Feddie" awards are nominated and voted on by the leaders of state groups across the country.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this week said the U.S. will not back down from its commitment to ensuring that children are no longer born with HIV, that the risk of becoming infected is curbed and that those already infected will have access to treatment. "I am here today to make it absolutely clear: The United States is committed and will remain committed to achieving an AIDS-free generation," Clinton told attendees at the International AIDS Conference.

Equality NC is a proud sponsor of Asheville's "What Amendment One Means for You and Your Family," the first of a series of statewide community law workshops led by the Campaign for Southern Equality and local attorneys designed to provide the latest information about the legal landscape for LGBT families following the passage of Amendment One. Led by local attorneys, "What Amendment One Means for You and Your Family" is a 90-minute workshop devoted to information and education about special topics impacting the LGBT community.

A new position paper by Diane M. Juffras of the UNC School of Government suggests that the passage of Amendment One would not bar municipalities from offering domestic partner benefits to public employees. Currently, nine towns, cities and counties in North Carolina offer domestic partnership benefits to public employees, including same-sex couples and their children. In 2013, the City of Charlotte will become the tenth.

The ACLU of North Carolina Legal Foundation has released a new document outlining the limited legal impact of Amendment One on domestic violence laws, the ability of public employers to offer domestic partner benefits, and on private contracts formed between same-sex couples. In the document, the ACLU of North Carolina uses information developed since the recent passage of Amendment One.
