Over 60 CookOUT for Marriage Equality Events Slated for North Carolina

During a 10-day period in May, beginning on the second anniversary of the passage of Amendment One, North Carolina’s 2012 constitutional ban on the freedom to marry (May 8), and ending following the close of oral arguments in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals case of Bostic vs. Schaefer, a case that could help topple Amendment One and marriage equality bans in several southern states (May 18), same-sex couples will be gathering throughout North Carolina at over 60 CookOUT for Marriage Equality events.

In collaboration with Time OUT Youth and iNSIDEoUT, Equality NC is proud to launch its #GetEngagedNCYouth campaign for North Carolina young people 20 years old and under. #GetEngagedNCYouth is a unique advocacy opportunity developed to empower youth to harness the power of their own stories and lived experiences for change.This program will help further develop the tools students and youth already possess and help them channel their passion into effective conversations with leaders of their school boards, local governments, and even elected representatives at the state level.

Equality NC Responds to United Church of Christ's Amendment One Challenge

Equality NC responded today to this morning's federal challenge to Amendment One filed in the Western District of North Carolina on behalf of the United Church of Christ (UCC) as a national denomination and clergy from across faith traditions and same-sex couples. The case, General Synod of the United Church of Christ vs. Cooper, challenges the constitutionality of marriage laws in North Carolina - including Amendment One - that ban marriage between same-sex couples and make it illegal for clergy to perform wedding ceremonies for same-sex couples within their congregations.

ACLU Files Additional Challenge to NC’s Amendment One

Today the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the ACLU of North Carolina Legal Foundation (ACLU-NCLF) and the law firms of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP and Ellis & Winters LLP filed a new case in federal court today on behalf of three married, same-sex couples seeking state recognition of their marriages. Because of the serious medical condition of one member of each couple, they are asking the court to take swift action.

Officials with Central Piedmont Community College released a statement today saying they are investigating an alleged incident of discrimination against a transgender student. The college, the statement reads, wants an “amicable resolution” with the student and is also examining its policies and procedures with LGBT organizations, including Equality NC.

Unfortunately, thanks to new, inequitable tax policies, married, same-sex couples must report that they are not married on the day they file their state taxes. This week, State Farm agent Pam Herndon secured multi-auto insurance for married, same-sex couples living in North Carolina. This is no small victory. In doing so, Ms. Herndon has ensured that not only can legally-married, same-sex couples living in North Carolina have the same State Farm insurance rates enjoyed by other married couples, but also that ALL married, same-sex couples living in states like ours, which bar marriage equality, can have access to this more economical State Farm coverage as well.
