Raleigh-based Equality NC, North Carolina’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization today launched the group’s regional affiliates in Hickory and Wilmington. Equality NC’s first-ever regional affiliates, Cape Fear Equality (Wilmington) and Equality Foothills (Hickory) will spearhead important local cultural work and civic engagement in the organization’s overall efforts to improve the lives of LGBT communities in eastern and western North Carolina.

Equality NC, North Carolina’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization will file an amicus brief with the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Bostic v. Rainey. Bostic is a case which could decide the issue of marriage equality in several Southern states, including North Carolina.

Equality NC, the state’s largest LGBT advocacy organization will host a press conference and rally on Tax Day, Tuesday, April 15, at 4:30 p.m., in Raleigh (Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough, St. Raleigh, NC, 27605) to protest a new state tax policy targeting same-sex couples.

Today the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the ACLU of North Carolina Legal Foundation (ACLU-NCLF) and the law firms of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP and Ellis & Winters LLP filed a new case in federal court today on behalf of three married, same-sex couples seeking state recognition of their marriages. Because of the serious medical condition of one member of each couple, they are asking the court to take swift action.

Officials with Central Piedmont Community College released a statement today saying they are investigating an alleged incident of discrimination against a transgender student. The college, the statement reads, wants an “amicable resolution” with the student and is also examining its policies and procedures with LGBT organizations, including Equality NC.

North Carolina's married, same-sex couple deserve to be recognized as married for *all* purposes and all days of the year, including Tax Day. Unfortunately, thanks to new, inequitable tax policies, married, same-sex couples must report that they are not married on the day they file their state taxes. In essence, they're married only 364 days a year. It's time fight back.

This week, State Farm agent Pam Herndon secured multi-auto insurance for married, same-sex couples living in North Carolina. This is no small victory.
In doing so, Ms. Herndon has ensured that not only can legally-married, same-sex couples living in North Carolina have the same State Farm insurance rates enjoyed by other married couples, but also that ALL married, same-sex couples living in states like ours, which bar marriage equality, can have access to this more economical State Farm coverage as well.

Equality NC, Freedom to Marry, and 12 other Southern statewide and regional organizations today launched a $1 million multi-state campaign to build majority support for marriage in the South. The new effort, called Southerners for the Freedom to Marry, will include significant field and media work over the next year in partnership with supportive organizations across the region.
